Right-leaning responses to the limited release of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a delicate legal matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter outlining the censorship process.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and likeness are visible in some of the materials, the extensive redactions raise serious questions about what may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans swiftly called for greater openness.
“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and suggested that a future legislature may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally Behind the Release
However, some conservative commentators and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.
The release—originating from a justice department run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely censored, and many of the men shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But a few are not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed some rightwing voices to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those files for months only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide permanently. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Comment Remains Subdued
However, broader comment on the right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud calls for transparency that preceded the legislative approval to enact a law mandating the files' publication.
The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy folders of files that contained no previously unseen data.
